In July 2016, Professor Keith Gull, the then Principal of St Edmund Hall in the University of Oxford, initiated the OXCEP Academic Medicine Course and continued to organise and direct the Course in 2017 and 2018 prior to his retirement, for senior medical/ dental/ biomedical academics at the level of assistant professor or higher, senior medical/ dental clinicians at the rank of consultant or higher, senior medical/ dental/ biomedical researchers at the rank of senior scientist/ chief scientist/ principal investigator, and senior policymakers in healthcare related services.

During 2024-2025, the Course expanded and evolved to partner with multiple Oxford University colleges and departments, for keeping up with the times, trends, and technologies of lifelong learning experience in the AI era, as well as the annually updated bespoke theme, sub-themes, and topics of the Course as needed by the course attendees of the year. Nevertheless, the Course continues to base at the college, in terms of its college accommodation, library services, and college events. Depending on the specialties of the course attendees and specific topics which they expect to learn from the Course, the OXCEP makes arrangement for a suitable department/ centre/ institute of the University and its professorial/ senior academics to host/ organise/ direct the academic programme of the Course and to issue a certificate of completion in its respective format and style.

 

As of July 2026, the OXCEP Academic Medicine Course had engaged 182 professorial/ senior academics from the Medical Sciences Division (MSD), the  Mathematical, Physical, Engineering and Life Sciences Division (MPLS), and the Social Sciences Division (SSD) of the University for hosting 317 senior healthcare academic visitors from 11 countries/ regions of the world, including the 7 OXCEP medical alumni who made the ultimate sacrifice as frontline medics during the fateful COVID-19 pandemic. The Course had also helped facilitate at least 16 joint research projects between its course attendees and their senior Oxford counterparts. Nowadays it maintains an annual average of 20% returning attendees who attend the Course for the second or third time over the years.
